The training project<\/strong> will start next monday on\u00a0May 20th <\/strong>in San Miniato and it is aimed at inviting aspiring young designer\/makers<\/strong>\u00a0from the most prestigious Schools of Fashion and Design in the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Craft the Leather?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Craft the Leather<\/strong><\/em> is a project powered by Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium<\/strong> and it is coordinated by Diane Ellen Becker<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Craft the Leather <\/em>workshop was created to experience Tuscan<\/strong> Vegetable-Tanned Leather: <\/strong>a Tuscan product of excellence hand crafted<\/strong> by master tanners <\/strong>in the strict compliance of sustainability of our Tuscan Leather District. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By introducing this traditional product to a new generation of students, we look forward to tomorrow’s Design professionals discovering new uses for a heritage material. We will experience together the great<\/strong> potential<\/strong> of the vegetable-tanned leather by using a mixture <\/strong>of creativity<\/strong> and classical techniques<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who will participate?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Coming from three different continents<\/strong>, eight<\/strong>  Schools of Fashion and Design,<\/em><\/strong> among the most prestigious<\/strong> worldwide, will take part in the 11th edition of Craft the Leather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Craft the Leather <\/em>is by invitation only<\/strong>; each school selects the most deserving student<\/strong> and their tutor, representing the culture of the institute to take part in this unique learning opportunity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project phases<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The project will be divided in three different phases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PHASE 1 – The Training Workshop<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training workshop will be held from 20 to 25 May 2024<\/strong> in the Tuscan Leather District<\/em> and the eight participants<\/strong> will be hosted, with their professors<\/strong>, at the Conservatory of Santa Chiara in San Miniato throughout the week. It will be an immersive experience<\/strong> in all aspects of vegetable-tanned leather<\/em>: from the visits to the tanneries and research centers to explore local production best practices,<\/strong> to the creative<\/strong> and technical<\/strong> experimentation during the craft workshop<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The master craftsman<\/strong> leading the exploration of techniques and tools of the craft of vegetable-tanned leather will again be Giorgio Testi<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Testi <\/em>will lead the workshop not only demonstrating traditional techniques<\/strong> of working vegetable-tanned leather<\/em> but he will assist participants by supporting their personal and experimental creative interpretation of the material<\/strong>. Using both classical leather working tools<\/strong>, and the instruments of their own practice designer\/makers will lay foundations for developing their personal unique<\/strong> and original <\/strong>project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PHASE 2 – Creative development<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Consortium<\/em> will provide<\/strong> the designers the Vegetable-Tanned Leather<\/em> offered by associated tanneries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design challenge is to create a three-piece collection<\/strong> highlighting the intrinsic characteristics<\/strong> of Vegetable-Tanned Leather.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PHASE 3 – The Final Contest<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The works created by the young designers will be presented together as a group show exhibited during the February 2025<\/strong> edition of Lineapelle<\/em>, the most important international leather fair<\/strong> where a contest will determine the best collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winner of the contest will receive a scholarship<\/strong> with the aim of continuing their studies and skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
