It\u2019s <strong>a process that requires\u00a0time and patience<\/strong>, and the skillful combination of technology and tradition.<\/p>\n<h2><em>Vegetable tanning process: preparation<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>When raw hides arrive, they are stored in appropriate warehouses.\u00a0 <strong>The cutting of raw hides is the first phase of the process;<\/strong> it&#8217;s done manually by experienced cutters. They divide the raw hides into various sections: bellies, butts and shoulders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>After cutting, hides are immersed in large drums<\/strong>. During this phase, salt and other impurities are removed from the hides, restoring them to their \u201cnatural\u201d hydrated condition.<\/p>\n<p>Now hides are ready for <strong>fleshing and splitting<\/strong>, operations done by machine with the help of a skilled worker. These procedures <strong>remove flesh and fat from the hide<\/strong>. Afterwards, a de-liming process neutralizes the hides while preparing them for tanning. The <strong>pickling procedure<\/strong> concludes the preparation of the hides, <strong>making them more receptive to the following phase of tanning using vegetable extracts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>Vegetable tanning<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The tanning phase begins now. <strong>Hides are immersed in a bath containing vegetable extracts<\/strong> for a number of days in order to obtain particular aspects. Leather, tanned using natural vegetable tannins extracted from trees, becomes softer, more ductile and durable.\u00a0 Colours become deeper over time and usage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Once the hides are removed from the drums, pressing and shaving procedures begin<\/strong>. These operations remove excessive moisture from the hides,\u00a0 bringing them to uniform thickness.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>Dyeing and fattening<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A new phase of workmanship begins in this department: <strong>dyeing and fattening<\/strong>, usually done using precise mixtures.\u00a0 These operations <strong>add colour to the skins while making them softer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The wet cycles terminate here.\u00a0 Hides are then stretched and cleaned in the final operation called \u201csetting out\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>Drying<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Drying is done in a special area where the hides are hung up one by one and remain for various days.\u00a0 Then a mechanical operation, known as <strong>staking<\/strong>, softens the skins by means of flexing.<\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>Vegetable tanning process and the finished product<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Thousands of vegetable-tanned skins from Tuscany are used to create bags, belts, footwear, wallets, small leather goods and upholstery.<\/p>\n<p>Leather accessories made with vegetable-tanned leather produced by tanneries associated to the Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium can be <strong>guaranteed by the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pellealvegetale.it\/en\/consortium\/quality-trademark\/\">quality trademark<\/a> \u201c<em>Vegetable Tanned Leather of Tuscany<\/em>\u201d<\/strong>.\u00a0 All the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pellealvegetale.it\/en\/consortium\/associated-tanneries\/\">member Tanneries<\/a>\u00a0follow specific regulations in their production, to guarantee their clientele in terms of tradition and fine quality.<\/p>\n<p>Vegetable-tanned leather features long-lasting and valuable qualities also because it becomes more attractive as time passes.
