Without any doubt, the oldest and most important one is related to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pellealvegetale.it\/en\/vegetable-tanned-leather\/\"><strong>tanning hides<\/strong><\/a> to make leather suitable for garments, furnishings, leather goods, car interiors, leather soles and shoe uppers.<\/p>\n<p>The term \u201c<em>tannins<\/em>\u201d was used for the first time in 1796 to indicate <strong>a substance present in vegetal extracts and able to build insoluble complexes with proteins of animal skin<\/strong>. Tannins are gathered from <strong>many types of trees and plants and can be present in barks, leaves, wood and also in fruits and roots<\/strong>. Only tannins are <strong>able to give tanned leather these unique characteristics<\/strong> that make them so special and distinguishable. The \u201csmell of leather\u201d is something typical and unique.<\/p>\n<h2>Tannins and their characteristics<\/h2>\n<p>In today\u2019s tanning process, <strong>tanners use vegetable tannins in both liquid and powder form<\/strong>. The most famous and ancient extract is obtained from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.silvateam.com\/Products-Services\/Leather\/Vegetable-extracts\/Chestnut-extracts\/Classification\"><strong>chestnut<\/strong><\/a> wood. This one is mainly used to produce<strong> leather for soles<\/strong>. But also the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.silvateam.com\/Products-Services\/Leather\/Vegetable-extracts\/Quebracho-extracts\"><strong>quebracho<\/strong> extract<\/a>, a tree that grows in the Chaco region in Argentina, is used in tanning process: in this case <strong>the extract\u00a0 gives to the leather an unmistakable reddish shade, a warm touch and a bright appearance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to chestnut and quebracho, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.silvateam.com\/Products-Services\/Leather\/Vegetable-extracts\/Tara-tannins\"><strong>Tara<\/strong><\/a><strong> tannins are mainly used in car industry and upholstery<\/strong>. This extract\u00a0 provides to the leather excellent properties:<strong> wholeness, softness, good resistance to light and to heat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.silvateam.com\/Products-Services\/Leather\/Vegetable-extracts\/Mimosa-extracts\">Mimosa extracts<\/a>, that give to hides a special pink colour, are especially suitable for shoes uppers<\/strong>, leather soles and leather goods. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.silvateam.com\/Products-Services\/Leather\/Vegetable-extracts\/Gambier-extracts\">Gambier extracts<\/a>, currently less used, are suitable for full grain and fine valuable articles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today a wilderness retreat and a slowdown to the use of chemicals,<\/strong> thanks to the deep changes in research, make <strong>tannins an important natural component for a wide range of industrial applications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tannins are the essential elements in a wide range of uses discovered over the centuries.
